OptumHealth's eSync Health Portal (eHP) started as a pilot for UnitedHealth Group and grew into the official wellness portal UnitedHealth Group delivered to its clients and partners nationwide, giving employees at large national businesses a single place to assess their health, follow a personalized plan, and earn rewards for sticking with it.
I spearheaded the original concept, design, and execution of OptumHealth's eSync Health Portal. It started as a pilot for UnitedHealth Group and, once proven, was adopted as the official wellness portal UnitedHealth Group delivered to its own clients and partners across numerous large scale businesses nationwide.
The portal opened with a streamlined online health assessment that identified personalized improvement opportunities for each user, replacing generic wellness content with a plan actually built around the individual answering it.
From there, tailored programs and activities gave people a clear next step, with progress tracking and rewards built in to keep momentum going instead of letting a one-time assessment gather dust.
User and patient interviews ran throughout the process, and that feedback was synthesized directly into functionality and usability improvements, an iterative loop that kept the portal grounded in how people actually used it rather than how it was originally scoped.
A detailed visual style guide kept the experience consistent as it extended across numerous large enterprise clients, each with its own brand identity and color scheme, so the underlying product stayed coherent even as its skin changed client to client. By the time eHP was operating at full scale, it sat inside a UnitedHealth Group business whose Optum division alone was reporting roughly 91 million people served nationwide, the kind of scale a single wellness portal has to hold up under once it stops being a pilot.
