Medical Solutions Clinician App

A clinician-facing mobile product built for travel healthcare professionals, backed by a design system that scaled it across every touchpoint.

Role

Design Leadership, Product Design, Design System

Industry

Healthcare Staffing, Mobile Product

Context

National Healthcare Staffing Agency

Audience

B2C

Platform

Web, iOS & Android

The Medical Solutions Clinician App is built to meet clinicians exactly where they are. No two assignments look alike and no two clinicians move through their careers the same way, so from first brand awareness through placement and every day on assignment, on web, iOS, and Android, the app had to flex with the clinician instead of asking the clinician to flex around it. That thinking took the App Store rating from 2.2 to 4.9.

Design System

The design system built for the Clinician App established a shared visual and interaction language for Medical Solutions' product ecosystem, backed by the same governance standards, competency frameworks, and career pathways that scaled the design organization from 3 to 12 people.

Impact

The Medical Solutions Clinician App is built to meet clinicians exactly where they are. No two assignments look alike and no two clinicians move through their careers the same way, so from first brand awareness through placement and every day on assignment, on web, iOS, and Android, the app had to flex with the clinician instead of asking the clinician to flex around it. That thinking took the App Store rating from 2.2 to 4.9.

The Medical Solutions Clinician App is a lifestyle application built for traveling healthcare professionals, not a utility they tolerate between assignments. No two assignments are alike and no two clinicians move through their careers the same way, so an app carrying this much responsibility had to meet the clinician at every step of their journey: first brand awareness, placement, and everything that happens once they are on assignment. Available on web, iOS, and Android.

Leading design for the Clinician App meant rebuilding the full path a traveling clinician takes with Medical Solutions, from how they first discover a job to how they apply, onboard, and manage assignments, credentials, and pay once they are in the field. That work now supports an app averaging 1.35 million sessions and more than 325,000 unique visitors a month, with an 82% task completion rate on clinician timesheets and 79% on the full application itself. Redesigning the application, onboarding, and matching experience lifted application conversion 8%, cut onboarding time 18%, and reduced clinician time-to-hire 10%, time returned both to clinicians getting into the field faster and to a business that depends on filling assignments quickly. The App Store rating moved from 2.2 to 4.9. Google Play moved from 2.7 to 4.8.

None of that happens without rebuilding how the design organization itself operates. I scaled the team from 3 to 12 people, including 6 direct reports and 2 people managers running their own teams, and built the governance standards, competency frameworks, and career pathways to make that growth sustainable instead of just bigger. I embedded a Continuous Discovery model and cross functional product triads across Product, Design, and Engineering that grew customer research participation more than 1,600%, and built a unified research infrastructure connecting interviews, behavioral analytics, and session video so evidence about the clinician experience became instantly searchable instead of buried in someone's notes. The hardest part of the job was never the design work itself. It was evangelizing a customer-first approach with leadership outside of product, making the case again and again that what a clinician experiences in this app is not a UX detail but the thing standing between a healthcare facility and the clinician they need on staff. Winning that argument, and building the operating model to prove it with data every time, is what let the design work actually stick.

Underneath the product sits a design system disciplined enough to keep a fast growing app coherent as it scales across an ecosystem of clinicians, health systems, recruiters, and internal teams. At the time of writing, that same discipline is what lets us introduce autonomous workflows built on the latest AI technology, cutting a discovery-to-prototype turnaround that used to take 5 to 8 hours down to under 30 minutes, without giving up rigorous human review. The goal was never to remove people from the process. It was to eliminate the mundane so the humans on the team, and the clinicians they design for, spend their time on what actually matters.

What Medical Solutions needed was never just a better app. It needed a customer-first approach proven out in an experience that works for the clinician and the business at once, one that manages to feel less like healthcare staffing software and more like something a clinician chooses to open. That is the standard the Clinician App was built to.

Design System

The Clinician App's design system is the backbone that let a fast growing healthcare product scale without losing coherence. Built as a shared library of components, tokens, and standards, it lets clinicians, health systems, recruiters, and internal teams recognize the same rigor and voice everywhere they touch Medical Solutions, whether that is the clinician facing app itself or an internal tool three teams over.

Component Library

The library spans every reusable pattern the clinician journey depends on: navigation, forms, cards, and even the fine details easy to overlook, like image loading states, where a documented blur and shadow treatment keeps thumbnails feeling considered rather than placeholder gray while content loads. Built and maintained in Figma with matching production components, it gave designers and engineers a shared source of truth instead of divergent one off implementations.

Governance & Documentation

Governance turned the system from a component kit into an operating standard. I established competency frameworks and career pathways alongside the system itself, so contribution and adoption were never left to informal habit. Every pattern shipped with documentation covering when to use it, how to use it, and what it is built to solve, the same discipline that let the design organization scale from 3 to 12 people without losing a shared standard.

Cross-Product Consistency

The system extended well past the Clinician App itself, aligning clinician facing tools with partner requirements across a network of 4,000+ healthcare facilities through a cross platform UX strategy and rebranding effort. The same components and standards now carry the Medical Solutions experience across recruiter tools, internal platforms, and every clinician touchpoint from first brand awareness through placement and ongoing assignment.

Accessibility Standards

Accessibility was built into the system, not bolted on after. Every core component was designed and validated to WCAG compliance standards from the start, so accessible experiences were the default output of using the system correctly, not a separate audit pass at the end.
